Dr. Irvin R. Heard is an Associate Professor at the University of the Cumberlands with the School of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS). Previously he was the Director/Instructor of Advanced Computer Technology with the Department of Agriculture at Job Corps in W.V., Federal Police Officer with the Department of Defense, Computer Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the Cyber Security Division and a U.S. Marine Combat Veteran.

His research interests fall within the umbrella of Computer Science to include the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Security Encryption Gateway, Cyber Defense & Offense, and Social Behavior with the use of computing devices. In addition, served on several committees from a mentor for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), and a Fellow Representative for the NIST Cybersecurity Division. Dr. Heard often helps underserved education communities and schools within the U.S. and other countries by donating servers, creating an organization network, website, and the set-up of open source Learning Management Systems (LMS).
