Dr. Susan J. Weaver’s research interests include classroom assessment techniques, the history of education in central Appalachia, and social issues. Her current projects include two book projects.

She came to University of the Cumberlands as founding director of the Center for Teaching and Learning as part of the Thinking Across the Curriculum (CTAC) which was the focus of UC’s 2005 Quality Enhancement Plan.  While on campus from 2005-2015, she served as Dean of Teaching and Learning, Director of Assessment, and Director of the Honors Program in addition to service on multiple other committees.

Dr. Weaver has taught for over twenty-five years in venues ranging from classrooms, satellite studios, prisons, and high schools.  In addition to her work for UC, she currently serves as a volunteer faculty member teaching introductory sociology in UN refugee camps in Kenya, Malawi, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

She has presented papers at multiple conferences including, most recently, the Appalachian College Association, Pedagogical, and the Southern Sociological Society annual meeting.

She currently teaches from her home in Durham, NC after relocating in 2015 because of family needs. In addition to teaching, she volunteers at a local school and for a non-partisan fair elections initiative and serves on the education committee for an environmental organization.  Her interests include hiking and exploring the culture of the area.
