Degree Requirements

You can earn your CACREP accredited Doctorate with a specialization in Counselor Education and Supervision online with our accelerated program. The Ed.D. program in Counselor Education & Supervision consists of 60 post-Master’s credit hours* designed to be completed in three years or less; while the PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision consists of 66 post-Master’s credit hours designed to be completed in approximately three years. These programs boast several design features (online classes, executive format and one-on-one instruction). Courses focus on Advanced Counseling Theories, Clinical Supervision, program evaluation and assessment, institutional improvement, multicultural counseling, online teaching, grant writing, strategic planning, and the development of sound research skills.

The Counselor Education and Supervision programs break down into three essential components that will be incorporated into each candidate’s program of study.


Administrative Leadership Core Curriculum: EdD – 27 hours; PhD – 30 hours
Either 27 hours or 30 hours are earned in courses featuring the qualities and activities of academic and counseling leaders. This component is designed to provide a broad knowledge base in leadership and its application to real-world situations.

ELCOL 836 Grant Writing & Proposal Development 3 hrs

For PhD, please add the following course:

ELROL 850 Qualitative Research Design 3 hrs

Professional Research: EdD – 15 hours; PhD – 18 hours
Either fifteen hours or eighteen hours are earned from coursework focusing on professional research. This component allows candidates the opportunity to extend their mastery of research and its application to strategic problem-solving. (A detailed discussion on the dissertation may be viewed in the Dissertation Handbook.)
