Background:
A doctorate in special education was attained from Texas Woman’s University in 2006. My field of study was learning disabilities with a minor in reading. This field was selected because of the historical, cultural, and philosophical perspectives taken by society regarding student with learning disabilities within and outside the structure of our educational system. Reading is a key academic area where students with and without a learning disability appear to have the greatest difficulty.

Various courses have been taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels for the past five years. My university instructional load has been in the following content areas: diversity, growth and development, early childhood special education, math methods, science and social studies methods, behavior management, child and adolescent psychology, assessment, curriculum development, elementary reading and reading across the curriculum and content areas, reading assessment and interventions strategies, education of exceptional learners, parent-professional communication, educational research, language development, and supervising student teachers.

Before completing a doctorate degree, I taught in a variety of classroom settings from pre-K to 6th grade within the span of eighteen plus years. Teaching experiences included general and special education, English as a second language, full-inclusion and resource, collaborative-teaching and self-contained environments. Such opportunities provided a wide range of experiences related to social and cultural conditions while working with diverse learners with a broad range of abilities, interests, and backgrounds.

Certifications:
Texas Educator Certification: Hearing Impaired (PK-12) ; Elementary Self-Contained (1-8); English as a Second Language (PK-12); Special Education Supplemental (PK-12)

Iowa Master Educator License: K-6 Teacher Elementary Classroom; PK-K Hearing Impaired; K-8 Hearing Impaired

Research Interests:
Current research interests are in the area of language development and cognitive reasoning of pre-school and primary children through instructional strategies. Focus is on consistent daily language experiences through a systematic approach for assimilating new information as it relates to existing language and cognitive reasoning.
