Admissions

A baccalaureate degree is required for admission into the graduate program.

Students may be admitted into this doctoral program through two tracks:

  • Students with a baccalaureate degree are admitted into the Entry-Level Track.
  • Students who have already earned a masters degree or are licensed in a recognized field of counseling practice (alcohol/drug counseling, marriage and family therapy, professional counseling, etc.) may be admitted into the Advanced Standing Track.

Students in either track may elect to participate in Study Abroad in Oxford.

Entry-Level Track
Students who have graduated from a regionally-accredited or state-approved institution of higher education with a baccalaureate degree in psychology, biological sciences, social sciences or a closely-related field would begin the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in this track.

Advanced Standing
Advanced Standing affords a student an opportunity to avoid unnecessary repetition of elementary courses and to proceed directly into independent study and clinical research.

Advanced-standing applicants must (i) have attended a postgraduate program at a regionally-accredited or state-approved institution of higher education and earned a masters degree in psychology, marriage and family therapy, professional counseling or a closely-related field; or (ii) hold an unrestricted license to practice in one of the recognized fields of counseling (alcohol/drug counseling, marriage and family therapy, professional counseling, etc.).

[Note: For purposes of this discussion, there is no difference between “registration” “certification” and “licensure” provided such qualifications are acknowledged by the relevant state authorities.]

Graduate Record Examination
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.

Application Procedure
Please submit the following information:

  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework from all colleges and universities attended. A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 for all prior coursework is required.
  • Candidates applying for Advanced Standing must also submit a copy of their professional counseling license.
  • Submit a 500-word Statement of Purpose for graduate study.
  • Submit two Letters of Reference from individuals commenting on the applicants academic and professional potential.
