The Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner program at University of the Cumberlands (UC) has officially received accreditation through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, a national accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Cumberlands’ two-year, online program allows registered nurses (RNs) to further their education and become prepared for independent practice as nurse practitioners (NPs). Nurse practitioners are granted more autonomy in their job than RNs and may order tests, write prescriptions and develop treatment plans, among other duties. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, NPs earn approximately $40,000 more per year than RNs, and there is an expected 31 percent growth for NPs between now and 2026.

“The nursing program is carrying out Cumberlands’ mission of service to others by preparing nurses to take their care to the next level,” said Cailen Baker, Nursing Program Director. “By obtaining national accreditation, the quality education that Cumberlands is known for is carried over into the advanced practice nursing profession.”

Nursing students at Cumberlands finish all didactic learning online and complete clinical hours during the course of the program at their daily jobs. Advancing in the nursing field allows Cumberlands students to have an even larger selection of opportunities after earning their master’s degree.

“We’re proud to see how the nursing program at Cumberlands is growing and excelling,” said Chris Leskiw, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “This accreditation is evidence that our faculty are teaching students the knowledge and skills that will enable them to advance their nursing careers.”
